I went to vet school in Madrid, Spain, and fell in love with anaesthesia when I learned how to induce horses. One of my teachers used to tell students that anaesthesia was so powerful it allowed a single person to bring a 500 kg animal safely to the ground. And he was right.
I went on to complete my residency in Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia at Oregon State University and became an ACVAA Diplomate in 2015. After a few locums around the USA and Ireland, I settled in the UK in 2016 and have been working at Pride Veterinary Referrals ever since.
As an anesthesiologist, I enjoy emergencies and fast-paced, intense cases where communication between teams is essential — bronchoscopies are a perfect example. I'm also passionate about reducing unnecessary opioid use, tailoring anaesthetic plans to the individual patient, finding that perfect level of premedication sedation, and improving post-anaesthetic recovery through simple, non-pharmacological strategies. Comfortable bedding, warmth, a quiet environment and avoiding nausea usually make an enormous difference to how our patients recover.
The Person Behind the Expert
When I'm not at work, my husband and I are usually trying to control the chaos that comes with two small girls and a giant Borzoi who can reach almost anywhere if there's food involved.
Given the choice, you'll find me writing science fiction books in my favourite coffee shop with an extra-hot oat latte (even in summer), hiking with the family, or lounging in the sun pretending to be a lizard.
My favorite foods are spanish pincho de tortilla and croquetas. These pretty much got me through vet school!
